Acryla-Gouache and Watercolor on Legion Hot Press

Inspired by Victorian ghost photography of ectoplasm oozing out of women's faces during a seance in the 1870's.

In the 1870s, spirit photography became somewhat popular in Europe, where it took on a new disturbing shape. Spirit photography was being endorsed by spiritual mediums, but also by some of society’s prominent scientists. Some claimed that spirits could take form through a substance called ectoplasm, a term that was coined by a Nobel prize-winning scientist no less, French physiologist, Charles Richet. Ectoplasm was proved on many occasions to be rather unusual methods of swallowing and regurgitating cheesecloth, textile products smoothed with potato starch or even paper, egg white or butter.

Part of an exhibition in 2019 at the now closed Helikon Gallery.
